Karivellur

Karivellur  is  located at the  northern  side  of Kannur   District.
Karivellur  gained its  name from "Karivellan",another name of Lord  Shiva. "Ooru" stands for  'place'.
Thus Karivellur is for the sitting place of Shiva.
The archeological survey of India found out remainings of Stone age and Iron age Karivellur.
So it is understood that ,during 500 BC onwards ,life was settled at Karivellur .Only Scheduled tribes were there during that period. Later , Budhism and Jainism invaded to this place ,along with other parts of Kerala .
It is belived that the present "Vaniya" and "Saliya " communities belong to Jainism and "Thiyya" community is from Budhism. Areas like "Pallikkovval", “Pallikkandam " of Karivellur show the effect of Budhism and Jainism , since "Palli" means the sitting place of God in their scripts.
During 9BC to 8BC, Bhramins came to Kerala from different parts of try-region>India like Karnataka ,AndhraPradesh  etc. Thus  Karivellur  also came under their dominance.Slowly Budhism and Jianism gave way to
Brahmins. One big example for Brahmins' dominance is the Shiva Temple of Karivellur ."Namboodiries" were the controlling  people   of the temple. A special dance form ,known as "Koothu"  was performed at the  temple ,every year. Koothu is performed by the 'Chakyar '  family. It is interesting to note that Koothu  is continueing  in the present era also ! Later  this  temple  came under  the control of the "nambi "  families like 'Kottukkara' ,'Edamana'  and  'Karimbil'. Then Karivellur  came under the rule  of Chirakklal Thamburan. So, this temple was also controlled by them. It  is understood that ,the neighboring Rajas fought  for this agricultural
village, since the soil was  very  good for agriculture. But the Chirakkal Raja was the ruler for very long time.

CULTURE OF KARIVELUR
THEYYAM

Theyyam is a dance form of Kolathu nadu. In  olden days ,people of
Kolathu nadu  were praying  for Goddesses  like 'KALI','NAGADEVATHA' etc. These beliefs and  other connected things were developed to make the dance known as Theyyam. All  most all Gods and Goddesses were celebrated in Theyyam.    The  art from of Theyyam and Karivellur ,are strongly interconnected. Manakkadan Gurikkal of Karivellur  modified  and popularized this art form. The  famous 'Adi Muchilot Temple' is the sitting place of 'Muchilot  Bhagavathi', which  is  the Goddess of the  caste vaniya. And , " Kalichan daivam", the  goddess  of pulayas is  also  sitting i n  Karivellur. Karivellur  is described in all most all
'Thottam  pattu' of  different types theyyams. Famous temples of Karivellur ,like Kuniyan parambathara ,  Theru Someshwari , Vaniyillam
Someshwari   etc are performing Theyyam in  every  year  or in a break of some particular time period.
